Rep. Pete Stark has found a new and creative way to avoid his constituents as Election Day approaches. Across the country, candidates are busy crisscrossing precincts, knocking on doors and engaging voters in their communities. Everyone, except Rep. Stark. Instead, Rep. Stark (who has refused to debate, not wanting to answer "stupid questions,") is addressing voters from a secret spider hole in an undisclosed, unknown location posting answers to “tough questions" on YouTube videos.
Must be nice to write your own "tough questions" and then have the power to edit the answers. More convenient, Rep. Stark has disabled the commenting feature on YouTube, preventing anyone from commenting on his "answers" or posing real questions.
In his first video, Rep. Stark purports to answer for his sharp tongue. His excuse: he’s emotionally involved and has a sense of humor not everyone can appreciate. As was noted in a blog in today’s SF Chronicle, that emotional involvement has led him to call “a female colleague a ‘whore,’ a male colleague a ’little fruitcake,’ and a black Cabinet member ‘a disgrace to his race.’” He's also suggested, from the floor of the U.S. House, that one of his female colleagues got her medical degree through pillow talk. Such sexist, homophobic, and racist comments are not funny. They are out of line and unbecoming for a United States Congressman.
Bottom line: Rep. Pete Stark wants the job, as long as he can write the interview questions and edit the answers. What tough questions would you ask Rep. Stark? Submit yours here.
